Art In A Poem – Beverly Aarons Artwork

Thank you so much for visiting the Art In A Poem exhibition at Studio 103 in Pioneer Square, Seattle, WA. This is my first ever art exhibition! Yay! I’m a writer, artist, and game developer who for years told myself that I had no visual art abilities. But in November 2019 I decided to challenge this self-imposed (and limiting) narrative. I signed up for a drawing class and I’ve been creating visual art ever since. I usually do portraits (300 so far) but for Art In A Poem I decided to explore something different.

The poem, “Dream Shroud” is a poem I wrote as a younger woman. Back then I was consumed by the life visions of others. I had spent years living the life others believed I should live instead of my own life “dream.” Back then I wrote a poem that has sadly been lost. But the impact it had on my life has only grown over the years. The most important line I remember is “I cast off the dream shroud.” And I’ve been casting off the dream shroud of others every day since then. These three drawings below are a testament to my struggles and my liberation from the constraints others would put on me.
